Another fab year for the Rob Roy

Another fab year for the Rob Roy

A huge thanks to everyone who took part in the 2012 Martin Currie Rob Roy Challenge last Saturday. 422 of the 461 people who started managed to walk, run and cycle the full 55 mile route from Drymen to Kenmore. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year (the seventh!) such fun, and for raising essential funds for Alzheimer Scotland, NSPCC and WaterAid. Participant Ross Leslie summed up the day: “Great event, great people, great causes, an absolute blast.”

Starting at Drymen the Rob Roy Challenge follows in the footsteps of the outlaw and folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor with a 16 mile hike through the beautiful Trossachs to Callander. At Callender everyone jumps on their bikes to tackle the 39 mile ride to Killin and along the south side of Loch Tay to the finish at Kenmore. The day winds up with a ceilidh, feast and fireworks.

The fastest runner was Peter Ferry with a blistering time of four hours and forty three minutes. The fastest female was Hayley White, who finished in six hours and twelve minutes. The fastest mixed team was Team Marvel with a time of six hours and thirty seven minutes.

This year the Scots adventurer Mark Beaumont took part with Team Marvel, dressed as Spiderman’s alter ego Venom. Team Marvel scooped prizes for both the fastest team and the best dressed team on the route.

“Even though I train for my expeditions in Perthshire I had never discovered the stunning routes that the Rob Roy follows.” Commented Mark. “I had a fantastic day, although running and cycling in a one piece spider man outfit certainly added an extra challenge to an already tough event!”
